Mike’s Mellow Moment – Easter Sunday 2016

In the early hours of Good Friday, at just past midnight, i was watching a “Play for the Day” on TV.

There was a scene involving police cars which I thought rather strange as they seemed to be ringing bells like their vehicles of old. It was only when i muted my TV that I realised the sound wasn’t on the TV but actually coming from my doorbell which was ringing so violently it was almost falling off the wall.

Rather alarmed (excuse the pun) that someone was at my door during the witching hour, it was with some trepidation that I went down the hall to open it. As the bell continued loudly I soon realised that no one was there. It was dark, cool and wet outside with rain bucketing it down. I shouted out that if anyone was there that they should make themselves known, but nothing happened. It seemed the door bell was stuck so I released it and the ringing stopped.

I settled back down to watch my play, albeit a tad shaken. 10 minutes later a chill went up my spine as the ringing started again. The doorbell is an old fashioned thing like a church bell on a wooden block so I took out the thing that hits the bell but still the motor was going like the clappers. All manner of thoughts went through my mind. Is it a sign? After all “For whom the bell tolls” is an old expression. But then again the rain could have caused the circuit to short, although the switch was protected from the elements under the porch?

Looking up on the internet it seems that some burglars sound doorbells to see if anyone is at home. There are also mentions of banshees and premonitions of death.

Oh…and I forgot to mention – the bell hasnt worked in years!

In the end I pulled the doorbell out of the wall. It was far too spooky for words.

As we head into British Summer Time, celebrate Easter and the Spring Solstice, all thoughts are on re-birth, new life and opportunity. I’m seeing Friday’s early morning incident in a positive light. If it was someone trying to get my attention they certainly succeeded. But it also reawakened in my mind the thought that there are always opportunities for new adventures and challenges. Opportunity often knocks – or rings – at our door. Will we brave to answer the call?

Enjoy the chill out, although I’ve had quite enough chills already! x
