Working in London has its advantages – amazing landmarks and culture, cosmopolitan cuisine and a capital we can be proud of that attracts a diverse range of people from all over the world. I also play spot the celebrity. This week I saw MP Alan Johnson being filmed talking to a glove puppet dog, ex Labour leader Neil Kinnock managing not to fall over as he famously did on the Spitting Image credits, various well known tv correspondents and astrologer Russell Grant dressed all in purple, Jonathan Cainer’s favourite colour. I still can’t believe he left this planet a year ago this month.
I was also lucky enough this week to broadcast to Africa this week with their own business bulletins and across the globe on the World Service in the studio right next door to Radio 4’s Today programme.
It’s often a surreal experience and no doubt I’ll feel the same again tomorrow while presenting the news on Classic FM and Smooth, etc while Katie Hopkins and Russell Brand haunt the studios next door at LBC and Radio X.
Meanwhile life goes on everywhere else with us all helping creation to evolve in our own unique way. Thanks to Judith last week for asking for more about homeless man Race Cee Karma, or Ian as he used to be known before he changed it by deed poll after he left Portsmouth for the ‘streets of gold’ in London. He may not have found those mythical pavements but he discovered much more in the joy he brings to passers by with his never ending joy and optimism. I’ll bring you more of his exploits soon. This week he asked if I could stop the rain as he was soaked. People still think weather men and women control the weather! Alina Jenkins, Helen Willets and Tomasz Schafernaker fall into that category and I bumped into all of them this week as they train up on the new weather maps and graphics to be launched later this year. They may not be able to stop the rain from falling but they can change our perception of the story and how we see things.
This coming week as we go about our business we too will see things we can’t change, events that seem surreal and we too will create experiences for other people that will mean different things to every one of them. Whether it’s astrologers dressed in vibrant colours, MPs talking to imaginary friends or simply people perceived to be losers in society (but in reality they have riches on another plane), let’s hope we change the world of the people we meet for the better. Creating the sunshine when they need it and the rain – metaphorically – when they’re parched.
So time to chill….a nice relaxing video on offer this week and a blissful track to recharge the batteries….enjoy 🙂
A lovely MMM,which I have listened to a few times already. I always enjoy reading about your week. Thank you Mike.
