Summer has arrived as we head into flamin’ June! The thunderstorms have been making things fresher as the humidity built, so unlike other parts of the world we can enjoy the diversity that the British weather brings us – hence the stunning green and pleasant land we have the privilege to live in.
On this beautiful island though we’ve all faced real challenges this week after the atrocities of Manchester. One of my colleagues at LBC, Katie Hopkins, left the station after she tweeted an over the top solution to the problem. The murder of innocent concert goers has again divided the country as people try to make sense of it all. What we mustn’t allow, is for a sense of fear, foreboding or hate to disrupt our unity. We are all connected and those who try to break us apart – whoever they maybe – cannot and will not succeed.
Working through the night this week has also been a challenge in a different way. I had hoped to hear the dawn chorus on my return home but the birds seemed strangely quiet. Broadcasting on the World Service to Asia/Pacific time zones always reminds you that the planet continues to spin, the sun continues to rise and people continue to do the best they can. So if the birds weren’t feeling like singing here, they were doing so with great gusto elsewhere in the world.
In this coming week – in our own part of this amazing part of the universe – let’s enjoy every moment of our summer while its here. And know that no matter what happens we have a choice in the way we react to events. Let’s look for the sunshine through the rain and where we do, rainbows will emerge. This blissful, laid back, height-of-summer chill out should help us do just that…..
Love this MMM. Have listened to it several times.
