In most workplaces in the land there seems to be hierarchy. Those who have been there the longest, those who are seen to be the most talented by ‘the powers that be’ and those who are lauded by colleagues and customers alike. In my profession, ‘freelancers’, casual staff or self employed on the other hand can be treated as inferior to ‘staff’. It’s the same when ‘the old guard’ close ranks and don’t make the newbies feel welcome and appreciated. Just because someone somewhere has slapped a label on another person, does that excuse anyone to treat the other as inferior?
It’s the same throughout the world with some people being honoured, others dishonoured. In the western world there’s the growing chasm between the haves and have nots while in India one of the most severe cases of that is the caste system where ‘the untouchables’ live on the fringes of society. No one must talk to them, deal with them or heaven forefend, touch them. In such a spiritual continent such blatant disregard for human life produces a huge dichotomy.
Gurus often speak of the eternal flame within everyone of us. Like a candle that is used to light many other candles, the blazing light remains the same – all from the One Source. We all have that golden divine spark within us that connects us and makes you me and me you. Whatever you do to me you do to yourself and vice versa.
As we face another week with its challenges and its highlights let’s remember that whatever we give out, we get back. And as we are all interconnected, by reaching out to those who society mistakenly regard as meaningless or worthless, we can connect with that divine spark in the other person which is exactly the same as within us. In the words of Maya Angelou…
